Latest Updates to Day 2 Testing

Last updated 7 January 2022.

Starting from 9 January 2022, all fully vaccinated travellers (vaccinated under the UK vaccination programme or an approved overseas vaccination programme) must take the Day 2 Lateral Flow (Antigen) test after arriving in England from a non-red list country. This replaces the previous regulation to take day 2 PCR test.

The free NHS Lateral Flow devices are not eligible for Day 2 testing. Day 2 Lateral Flow tests must be purchased from an approved provider in the Government list such as Medicspot.
Travellers who are not fully vaccinated are still required to take Day 2 and 8 Tests.

You can find all the information you need about choosing the right tests for your travels, booking your tests and when to take your tests using our updated travel planner. Any future changes to travel tests rules will be reflected on our website as soon as they are confirmed by the UK Government.

Day 2 PCR Test FAQ’s

What is a Day 2 PCR Test?

The Day 2 PCR test is designed to keep you and your contacts safe after travelling to the UK. The PCR test looks for the Covid-19 virus on a swab sample collected from the back of the throat and nose. It works by detecting the genetic material in the virus called RNA.

The Day 2 PCR test is designed to keep you and your contacts safe after travelling to the UK. If you get a positive result from your day 2 test, you must self-isolate for 10 days starting from the day that the test was conducted. People you live with or have travelled with should also self-isolate for 10 days from the day after your positive Covid test.

Do I need to take a Day 2 test even if I’m fully vaccinated?

Day 2 PCR tests are mandatory for all travellers arriving in the UK regardless of vaccination status. Partially vaccinated or non-vaccinated travellers must take mandatory day 2 and day 8 PCR tests, although they can take an optional Day 5 Test to Release which, if negative, allows them to end their quarantine early.

How much is a Day 2 PCR test?

Our Day 2 PCR test cost just £75. This includes free express delivery, 24 hours customer service and free doctor-signed certificate.

When should I order my Day 2 PCR test?

Where can I get a PCR test for travel near me?

Please place your order before travel to ensure your test kits arrive on time.

What is included in my test kit?

Your Day 2 PCR test kit will include an instructions manual, a cotton swab, sample tube, clear sealable bag, a return box with a security label and a free Royal Mail returns label.

How do I take a PCR test?

You will perform your samples using a gentle and non-invasive swab. It involves inserting a thin, flexible stick with a cotton tip into your tonsil and/or nostrils in order to sample any fragments of viruses. The swab is rotated several times in both before being withdrawn and is then sealed in a tube to be sent to a lab for analysis. See the infographic below for a step by step visual on how to perform the PCR test yourself.

What should I do if I test positive?

If you receive a positive PCR test you, and anyone you live with, must self-isolate to avoid spreading the infection to other people. The self-isolation period includes the day your symptoms started (or the day you had the test if you do not have symptoms) and the next 10 full days. If you live in a care home or in supported living, you may need to self-isolate for 14 days instead of 10. You must inform your employer, school or nursery of your result.

What does a negative PCR swab test result mean?

A negative test result means that there was no evidence of genetic material of Covid-19 in the swab of airways. This is usually interpreted as meaning that you are not infected with Covid-19.

What happens if I don’t take a Day 2 test?

The Day PCR 2 tests are mandatory for all arrivals entering the UK, even if you are fully vaccinated. Unvaccinated and partially vaccinated travellers must take Day 2 and Day 8 PCR tests. You may face a penalty if you fail to test for Covid-19 on or before day 2 of your arrival. Please see the UK government guidance for more information.
