FAQs | Covid-19 Testing and Travel

If you’re planning to book a trip abroad, you’ll need to be clued up about the different Covid-19 tests needed for international travel. The rules and regulations surrounding travel are constantly changing, and it can all seem a little daunting. This FAQ section explains everything you need to know about Covid-19 tests for travel, from what types of tests are available to where to get a test.

Which types of tests are available?

Here at Medicspot, we provide fast and convenient Covid testing from the comfort of your own home. We’re proud to offer the full range of Covid tests for travel all in one place. These include:

How long before travelling should I get a Covid test?

For most destinations requiring evidence of a negative test for entry, including the UK, you must take a Covid-19 test in the 72 hours (3 days) before departure. For some airport departures and destinations, it’s 48 hours. Tests taken earlier than this may be rejected, and you may be refused travel, or even fined.

If your test results come back positive, you must not travel, and should self-isolate for the required period, currently 10 days in the UK. This includes the day you receive your test results and the next 10 full days. Everybody in your household needs to isolate too, even if their test was negative or they don’t have symptoms.

Where can I get a Covid test?

You can order a test online or alternatively pick up a test at one of our 100+ Covid test hubs. For PCR tests, simply book your test for instant collection online, visit your nearest Covid test hub, pick up your test kit, perform and drop off your sample. Your sample must be performed and dropped off by 2pm for same day for processing at one of our labs. You can then expect to receive your results and certificate the next day by 11:59pm. Please see our Covid test page for further information.

For antigen or lateral flow tests, you can order online for just £29 and delivered for free to anywhere in the UK, on the next day if you order before 2 pm Monday to Friday. Follow the procedure by performing the self-test at home, register your test and receive your GP-certified test result on the same day.

Can I use an NHS for travel?

No, you cannot use a free NHS test for travel. These tests are for those with coronavirus symptoms or priority groups, such as care workers. You must book a test with a private provider like Medicspot if you are required to show evidence of a negative test result upon arrival at your destination.

How do I find out about travel restrictions for my destination?

Many destinations have Covid-19 travel restrictions in place. These restrictions can change quickly and without prior notice. To find out more about restrictions in place for your destination, please visit your destination's government website and the UK government website. It is also advised that passengers due to travel soon should continue to check for updates frequently as the departure date approaches.

Can I take these tests abroad?

Yes! To save sourcing a test abroad, you can order a rapid antigen test from Medicspot before you go on holiday to take with you providing you'll be able to use a home testing kit whilst abroad.

Can I still go ahead with booking my holiday despite Covid-19?

It is recommended to follow the guidance from governments and public health officials to help slow the spread of Covid-19. The decision to travel is a personal one and will also depend on the situation in the country you wish to travel to.
