How Our Prescribing Process Works

Medicspot prescribes GLP-1 weight-management treatments safely and responsibly under UK medical regulations.

We currently prescribe Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) for patients who meet our eligibility criteria.

All prescriptions are issued by The Independent Pharmacy (TIP), a GPhC-registered pharmacy, following individual clinical review.

This process ensures every patient receives safe, evidence-based treatment, reviewed by a qualified prescriber.

Step 1: Complete Your Medical Assessment

Every patient starts with a detailed online assessment covering:

  • Medical history, medications, allergies, and contraindications
  • Weight, BMI, and weight-management goals
  • Mental health, eating behaviour, and relevant lifestyle factors

All assessments are reviewed by a clinician with prescribing rights. We do not issue prescriptions automatically or guarantee eligibility.

Step 2: Provide Identity and Medical Verification

Before any treatment can be prescribed, we verify:

  • Photo ID and proof of address
  • NHS GP details for continuity of care
  • Summary Care Record (SCR) – where possible this is accessed electronically via NHS systems, and patients provide a recent copy via the NHS App, GP printout, or secure upload where this is not possible.

The SCR enables our clinicians to confirm medical suitability and ensures compliance with NICE and GPhC guidance for safe GLP-1 prescribing.

Step 3: Clinical Review

A qualified independent prescriber at The Independent Pharmacy (TIP) reviews each case in detail.
They check:

  • Current medications and potential interactions
  • Any conditions that would make treatment unsuitable (e.g. pregnancy, eating disorder, pancreatitis, unstable mental health)
  • Any condition that would require extra monitoring and ensure this is carried out
  • Prior GLP-1 use and recent dose level, if switching from another provider or medication

No prescription is issued unless the prescriber is satisfied that treatment is safe and appropriate.

Step 4: Starting or Continuing Treatment

For New Patients

If you are new to GLP-1 medication, you will always start on the lowest licensed starting dose (e.g. 2.5mg for Mounjaro, or 0.25 mg Wegovy).

Your clinician will review your progress monthly before any dose increase.

For Patients Switching from Another Provider

If you are transferring from another provider, you must provide:

  • A photo or screenshot of your most recent prescription showing your name and the date the prescription was issued.
  • All other new patient requirements, such as ID, full body photo and summary care record

The prescriber will independently verify your suitability and may adjust your dose or restart at a lower level if clinically necessary. Acceptance from a different company does not automatically guarantee we will automatically prescribe weight loss medication.

This ensures safe continuity of care and full compliance with NICE and MHRA guidance.

Step 5: Dispensing and Delivery

If approved, the prescription is issued by The Independent Pharmacy (TIP) through its secure prescribing system and dispensed by a GPhC-registered pharmacy.

All prescriptions are recorded in our shared governance log for audit and monitoring.

Step 6: Monthly Follow-Ups

Every patient completes a monthly self-assessment covering:

  • Weight and waist-measurement updates
  • Side-effect reporting
  • Adherence and confidence with injections

A clinician reviews each submission and determines whether a dose change or continuation is appropriate.

You’ll be contacted by email or sms if additional information is needed or if a clinical review is required before your next prescription.

Step 7: Weekly Health-Coaching Support

Alongside medical review, you receive weekly check-ins with your assigned health coach.

Coaches help with motivation, side-effect management, and lifestyle change, and can flag any concerns to the clinical team.

Any medical or safety concern is escalated directly to a prescribing clinician.

Safety and Escalation

Patients can contact Medicspot at any time regarding side effects or concerns:

  • Mild issues may be managed through coaching support and clinically reviewed guidance.
  • Moderate or persistent symptoms trigger direct clinical review, and the clinical team will reach out to discuss the best next steps to manage the side effects and the medication
  • Severe or urgent concerns are escalated to emergency care if needed.

All reports are logged for governance and quality-improvement review.

Regulation and Compliance

Medicspot operates under UK clinical and data-protection guidance:

  • Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) – data-protection compliance
  • NICE / MHRA – evidence and guidance we follow for treatment suitability

Additionally, our prescribing partner is registered by – and subject to the regulations of – the following organisations:
