Are Wegovy Injections Safe?

• Wegovy (semaglutide) is a GLP-1 receptor agonist – a medication that mimics a natural hormone controlling your appetite and blood sugar.
• It’s licensed in the UK for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27-30 with at least one weight-related condition, when used alongside diet and activity changes.
• Some people experience mild, short-term side effects as their body adjusts, such as nausea, bloating, or tiredness.
• The key to safety is using it under clinical supervision with ongoing support.

The active ingredient, semaglutide, mimics a hormone called GLP-1 that helps regulate your appetite and blood sugar. It tells your brain you’re full sooner and slows digestion so you stay satisfied for longer. This makes it easier to eat less and form new, sustainable habits.

But Wegovy isn’t a “quick fix.” It’s most effective and safest when used alongside a balanced diet, regular movement, and coaching support.

Yes, when prescribed and monitored correctly, Wegovy has been shown to be safe and effective for most eligible adults.

Backed by clinical research

Wegovy has been through multiple large-scale studies, including the STEP clinical trials, where participants lost an average of ~15% of their body weight over 68 weeks¹. Most side effects were mild to moderate, with very few serious events.

Approved and licensed in the UK

Wegovy is licensed in the UK (SmPC) for adults with:

• BMI ≥ 30, or
• BMI 27-30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, or cardiovascular disease.

These are the licence criteria, which many private providers (including Medicspot) follow when assessing suitability.

The MHRA (UK medicines regulator) confirms that Wegovy is safe and approved for use under prescription. It also warns against buying unregulated versions online, which can be counterfeit and dangerous². Always check that any online services are following MHRA guidance like Medicspot.

What NICE recommends for the NHS

NICE Technology Appraisal TA875³ gives stricter criteria for use within NHS specialist weight management services. Under NICE guidance, semaglutide should be offered only when:

• It is used for up to 2 years within a specialist programme, and
• The person has at least one weight-related comorbidity and one of the following:
  • BMI ≥ 35, or
  • BMI 30-34.9 and meets criteria for referral to specialist weight management services.

NICE criteria reflect how the NHS allocates treatment resources, not the full scope of the medicine’s licence. This means private services are able to prescribe and monitor medicine safely without NICE authorising it. As long as a medicine is used within the prescribing guidelines and under its license it is ok outside of the NHS.

Everyone’s body and medical history are different. Wegovy can be life-changing for some, but not suitable for everyone.

It may be safe and appropriate if you:

• Are 18 or older
• Have a BMI ≥ 30, or ≥ 27 with a related health condition
• Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
• Have no history of pancreatitis, kidney problems, liver or gall bladder problems, digestive paralysis or ventricular heart failure
• Are committed to combining medication with lifestyle changes

• Have a history of severe stomach, liver or kidney problems
• Have had pancreatitis in the past – in most cases, Wegovy would not be recommended
• Are using another GLP-1 medication (e.g., Mounjaro)
• Have had allergic reactions to semaglutide or similar medicines
• Are aged under 18 or over 75

Most of the clinical evidence we have so far shows that Wegovy is safe and well-tolerated when used long-term, with large trials following patients for more than two years. Research continues to show stable safety profiles over extended periods⁴, particularly when the medication is used under regular medical supervision.

In the UK, NICE currently recommends using Wegovy for up to two years within a specialist weight management service³. This doesn’t mean it becomes unsafe after that point – it simply reflects how long the clinical trials have followed people so far.

Around the world, many patients continue GLP-1 treatments beyond two years, especially when they have obesity-related health conditions or diabetes that benefit from ongoing weight management.

If longer-term treatment is appropriate for you, your Medicspot prescriber will review your progress, discuss the evidence we have, and ensure it remains safe, effective, and in line with your health needs.

Most people tolerate Wegovy well, especially when the dose is increased gradually. The most common Wegovy side effects happen during the first few weeks and include:

• Nausea or vomiting – Eat smaller, lighter meals, avoid greasy foods
• Constipation – Stay hydrated, add fibre to your diet and keep moving
• Diarrhoea – Rehydrate with fluids and electrolytes
• Headache or fatigue – Rest and maintain blood sugar balance

Side effects usually ease as your body adapts.

• Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) – seek urgent care if you have severe stomach pain or vomiting
• Gallbladder problems – report abdominal pain, fever, or jaundice
• Low blood sugar – mainly if used with diabetic medication.
• Aspiration – for people who already have slow gastric emptying, slowing it even more can increase the risk of food going down into your lungs and causing chest infections. If you develop a cough or breathing difficulty seek urgent medical advice.
• Possible DKA risk – particularly if insulin doses are reduced or stopped too quickly. Never change your insulin without medical advice.
• Pregnancy risk – must be stopped before conception and you must use adequate contraception during use to decrease the risk of getting pregnant while taking it.
• Surgery and anaesthesia – because Wegovy slows stomach emptying, there is a small increased risk of food remaining in your stomach during a general anaesthetic. Always tell your surgical and anaesthetic team that you’re taking Wegovy. They may adjust your fasting instructions or advise a temporary pause.

• Wegovy is taken once a week as a subcutaneous (under the skin) injection.
• Your prescriber will start you on a low dose (0.25mg) and gradually increase it over several months.

• Do not reuse the needle, only the pen. A clean needle should be used each time you inject.
  
• Store your pen in the fridge until ready to use.
• Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and your clinician’s guidance.
