Mounjaro Maintenance Dose

A Mounjaro maintenance dose is a safe and popular method for patients to sustain their weight loss once reached their target weight using the medication.

Many UK providers stop prescribing Mounjaro for weight loss once a patient’s BMI drops below 25. At Medicspot, we take a more flexible, patient-centered approach.

We will continue prescribing Mounjaro for weight loss maintenance if our clinicians are confident that it is safe and appropriate, the patient meets our prescribing criteria, and they can provide evidence of their previous prescription.

What is a Mounjaro maintenance dose?

A Mounjaro maintenance dose refers to the ongoing, lower (or stabilised) dosage of Mounjaro (tirzepatide) that a patient continues to take after achieving their target weight loss or desired metabolic goals.

Instead of titrating up through higher dosages (as is common during the initial weight loss phase), a maintenance dose is about preserving those results. It can help prevent rebound weight gain and maintain long-term metabolic benefits.

Common maintenance doses include 2.5 mg, 5 mg, but it can be another dose depending on the individual patient’s journey, response to treatment, and tolerability.

Why do Mounjaro patients often take a maintenance dose?

While the initial goal for many Mounjaro users is weight loss, maintaining that weight loss can be equally challenging. Here’s why maintenance dosing is popular:

  • Prevention of weight regain. After substantial weight loss, the body naturally fights to regain weight. Mounjaro helps keep appetite and cravings in check.
  • Metabolic regulation. Mounjaro improves insulin sensitivity and glucose control, even post-weight loss—benefits that patients may want to maintain.
  • Psychological support. Maintenance dosing can offer reassurance and structure, especially for those who have struggled with long-term weight stability in the past.
  • Bridging to lifestyle changes. Some patients use maintenance doses while they solidify long-term habits around food, movement, and mindset.

When should you consider a maintenance dose?

You may want to consider transitioning to a maintenance dose of Mounjaro if:

  • You’ve achieved your goal weight or a clinically significant drop in BMI.
  • Your BMI is approaching 25 or lower, but you still benefit from appetite regulation and glycemic stability.
  • You’re stable on a specific dose and don’t need to titrate upward anymore.
  • You and your clinician agree that it’s time to shift from active weight loss to maintenance.
