Mounjaro Eligibility: Who Can Take It and How to Check If You Qualify

Mounjaro is a prescription medicine used for weight loss in the UK. It is only offered after a full clinical assessment, because your medical history, BMI, current weight, and existing conditions all affect whether it is safe and appropriate for you.

This guide explains the eligibility rules for Mounjaro, who it may be suitable for and how our clinicians decide whether treatment is right for you.

How Mounjaro eligibility works in the UK

Mounjaro can only be prescribed after a regulated clinical assessment. This allows a prescribing clinician to review:

  • your BMI and current weight
  • your medical history
  • any weight related health issues
  • medications you currently take
  • your past attempts at weight loss
  • possible safety concerns or contraindications
important

Eligibility is not based on BMI alone. The decision to prescribe depends on your overall health profile and whether Mounjaro is clinically appropriate for you. Treatment is only available to UK residents aged 18 to 75.

Who can take Mounjaro?

Mounjaro may be suitable if you meet one of the following criteria.

1. BMI of 30 or above

People with a BMI of 30 or higher are usually eligible, provided it is clinically safe for them to take a GLP-1 medication.

2. BMI of 27 to 29.9 with a weight related health issue

You may be eligible if your BMI is between 27 and 29.9 and you have a condition that is made worse by excess weight. Examples include:

  • high blood pressure
  • prediabetes or type 2 diabetes
  • polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • high cholesterol
  • sleep apnoea
  • metabolic risk factors linked to weight

These individuals often rank among the highest intent searchers, and the page must continue to serve them.

3. BMI under 27 where there is a clear clinical justification

Some patients fall into a borderline group where BMI does not fully reflect their health risks or treatment needs. Examples include:

  • rapid weight regain after previous weight loss
  • clinically significant metabolic risk markers
  • long-term obesity history that has recently reduced BMI
  • cases where weight related conditions remain significant despite BMI changes

These cases require detailed clinical review. Eligibility is not guaranteed.

4. People with a BMI under 25 who are already on weight loss medication

Medicspot can continue treatment for patients with a BMI under 25 if:

  • they are already taking a prescribed weight loss medication, and
  • they can provide evidence of this, and
  • it remains clinically safe and responsible to continue
important

This is a limited group and each case is individually reviewed.

Who should not take Mounjaro?

Mounjaro will not be suitable for people with certain medical conditions or risk factors. These include:

  • current or past pancreatitis
  • severe gastrointestinal disease
  • personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer
  • history of MEN2
  • pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • people under 18 or over 75
  • individuals taking medications that may interact negatively, unless a clinician confirms it is safe
  • people using insulin who have not been reviewed by a specialist
important

You may also be declined if you are experiencing symptoms or taking medicines that could increase the risk of side effects. These decisions are made for your safety.

How clinicians decide

During your online assessment, a clinician will review all information you provide, including:

  • your BMI and recent weight pattern
  • your weight loss history
  • whether you have tried diet and lifestyle methods
  • your medical history and diagnoses
  • any medications you take
  • possible contraindications
  • the likelihood of safe dose escalation

This ensures the treatment decision is based on your individual health needs, not only on BMI thresholds.

Who should not take Mounjaro?

There are multiple reasons why Mounjaro may not be suitable for some people, including:

  • people with a known allergy to tirzepatide or any of the ingredients in Mounjaro
  • those with certain medical conditions or who are taking medications that interact negatively with Mounjaro should not use it. This includes people with a history of pancreatitis, severe gastrointestinal disease, or thyroid cancer. Mounjaro can also interact negatively with some oral contraceptives, so a barrier should also be used.
  • patients taking insulin will need to seek specialist advice before taking Mounjaro.
  • those under 18 years of age or over 75 years old.

Can you get Mounjaro with a BMI under 30, or under 27?

Yes, many people with a BMI below 30 can be eligible if they have a weight related health issue such as PCOS, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or prediabetes.

If your BMI is under 27, eligibility usually depends on clinical justification. This is assessed on a case by case basis. To find out if your particular scenario is suitable take our free online assessment, and be prepared to answer some follow-up questions from our clinicians.
