Feeling ready for the next step

You’ve made it to 0.5mg – that’s a big milestone. It’s normal to feel both proud and a little unsure about moving up to the 1mg Wegovy dose. This next stage is about building on what you’ve already achieved. For many people, your body’s adapting, your appetite is settling, and you’re getting closer to where the real progress begins.

What the 1mg Wegovy dose means

Wegovy (semaglutide) is a weekly, clinician-supervised treatment from a class of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists, which mimic a natural hormone that helps control appetite and blood sugar.¹ The 1mg dose is usually introduced once you’ve tolerated the lower doses and your clinician is happy with how you’re responding. It’s a sign that your plan is working, and that your body’s ready for the next step.

Who Wegovy is licensed for in the UK

In the UK, Wegovy is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30kg/m² or higher, or 27kg/m² or higher if you have a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or sleep apnoea.²

tip

“You’re not doing this alone. At Medicspot, every prescription is reviewed by a UK prescriber, your medical history is checked through your NHS Summary Care Record (SCR), and your dedicated health coach helps you manage side effects, track progress, and stay confident through each stage of your journey.”

The role of the 1mg stage

Your journey with Wegovy is planned in steps. It starts low, then builds up to your maintenance dose. Typical dose escalation might look like: 0.25mg0.5mg → 1mg → 1.7mg2.4mg maintenance dose.³ The 1mg mark is often around weeks 9-12 of this schedule. It’s a time when your body has had a chance to adjust and you’re ready for a higher dose.

tip

“Every 28 days, you’ll have a check-in to see how you’re feeling – how your body’s responding, any side effects, and how your progress is going. A clinician will review everything to decide whether it’s right to stay on the same dose or move up. It’s about understanding your body’s response and finding the right pace for your journey.”

When you might stay at 1mg

Every person’s journey is unique. You may stay at 1mg if:

  • side effects are still present and you need more time,
  • you are progressing well in weight and appetite control, and your clinician decides further escalation may come later,
  • you have co-morbidities or other health issues requiring slower titration.

The aim always is safe, effective, sustainable weight management, not simply chasing a number.

What to expect at the 1mg dose

Effects on appetite and metabolism

Now that you’re at 1mg, many people begin to notice more stable changes: less frequent hunger, smaller portion sizes, fewer snacks. For some members, cravings shrink, and fullness sets in sooner. While the full maintenance effect may not yet be reached, this dose is still meaningful.

Clinical data show that at higher doses (e.g. 2.4mg) semaglutide has led to average weight losses around 15% of body weight in trials for people without diabetes.⁴ While you are not at that maintenance dose yet, you’re moving in that direction.

Monitoring your progress

You may want to consider tracking:

  • how your hunger feels (are you more in control?)
  • what your portion sizes look like
  • weight and waist measurements week by week
  • how you feel after meals, including energy levels and mood
  • any side effects or unexpected symptoms
tip

“Don’t worry if progress feels slower at 1mg. This stage is about steady adjustment, not instant results. Full appetite control may come later, once you reach your maintenance dose of 2.4mg and keep building healthy habits with your Medicspot coach.”

What are the common side effects of Wegovy 1mg?

Because GLP-1 receptor agonists like semaglutide can slow stomach emptying and affect gut signalling, you may experience side effects, such as:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhoea or constipation
  • Bloating or mild tummy discomfort
  • Reduced tolerance for large meals
  • Potential dehydration if vomiting or diarrhoea cause fluid loss.

Practical tips to manage these

  • Eat smaller, more frequent meals rather than 3 large meals.
  • Choose nutrient-dense, high-fibre foods that promote fullness (vegetables, whole grains, lean protein).
  • Stay well-hydrated – drink 6 to 8 cups or glasses of fluid a day unless restricted.
  • Avoid particularly fatty or heavy meals during adjustment weeks.
  • Notify your prescriber if you experience persistent or severe vomiting, dehydration, or unexplained abdominal pain (which could signal pancreatitis).
  • If side effects persist, your Medicspot team may hold the 1mg dose for additional weeks before titration.

What to look out for

Mild side effects are normal and to be expected. If you feel your symptoms are more severe than you expected or you are concerned please us.

We would always want to know about stomach pains that feel a little more than a mild discomfort or if you start feeling unwell. Any unusual redness or discharge from your injection site is also something to look out for.
