How Wegovy 2.4mg fits into your journey

Reaching the 2.4mg weekly dose is an important moment. It usually means you’ve completed your dose escalation phase and your body has adapted to treatment.

At this point, two questions naturally come up:

  • “Should I move up from 1.7mg to 2.4 mg?”
  • “Once I’m here, how long do I stay on it, and what happens next?”

This guide answers both, based on real clinical guidance from NICE, research from the STEP trials, and Medicspot’s experience supporting thousands of UK patients on GLP-1 treatments.

tip

“At Medicspot, your care is always clinically supervised. A prescribing pharmacist reviews your suitability for 2.4mg, we verify your medical history through your NHS Summary Care Record, and your health coach works with you to build sustainable habits during maintenance.”

– Laura

What is Wegovy 2.4mg?

Wegovy contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics a natural gut hormone helping regulate appetite, fullness, and blood sugar.¹

The 2.4mg weekly dose is the maintenance dose – the highest approved level for weight management in the UK.² It’s designed for long-term use once you’ve gradually stepped through the doses:

  1. Wegovy 0.25mg
  2. Wegovy 0.5mg
  3. Wegovy 1mg
  4. Wegovy 1.7mg
  5. Wegovy 2.4mg

Should you increase from 1.7mg to 2.4mg?

Moving from 1.7mg to 2.4mg is often the next step, but it’s not for everyone. Your decision depends on three things:

1. Tolerability

If you’re comfortable on 1.7mg with minimal nausea or bloating, you’re likely ready to increase. If side effects are still noticeable, your prescriber may advise staying at 1.7mg a bit longer before moving up.

2. Progress

Clinical guidance suggests reviewing progress at each stage. If weight loss has slowed or plateaued, the 2.4mg dose may help you reach your next goal.

3. Clinical review

Our clinicians check:

  • Whether you’ve reached a healthy BMI range or still need active weight loss
  • If anything has changed on your NHS Summary Care Record (SCR)
  • Your tolerability and motivation to continue lifestyle changes
tip

“Many people find 1.7mg gives good progress, but 2.4mg helps stabilise appetite long-term, and that’s when habits really start to stick.”

– Laura

What to expect at the 2.4mg maintenance dose

Once you reach 2.4mg weekly, the focus shifts from dose escalation to weight maintenance.

How your body responds

In large STEP trials, people on 2.4mg plus lifestyle support lost an average of 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks.³ Most continued to see slow, steady loss before reaching a healthy plateau.

Appetite is usually more stable, cravings drop, and many describe “thinking about food less.” This mental freedom is a major benefit of reaching maintenance.

How long you stay on it

NICE guidance and NHS specialist services recommend regular review at around 2 years to decide whether continuing makes sense for you.⁴ Some patients may stay on Wegovy longer for weight-maintenance if clinically appropriate.

What changes at this stage

  • Weight loss usually slows – and that’s expected.
  • You may see more focus on behaviour change with your coach.
  • Side effects like nausea often improve significantly after stabilisation.

Long-term maintenance on Wegovy

The goal of maintenance is to help your body defend its new lower weight and prevent regain.

Why this matters

When weight drops, metabolism and appetite hormones try to push it back up.⁵ Wegovy helps “hold the line” by reducing that drive to eat more.

What helps long-term success

  • Keep your weekly injection day consistent (helps routine).
  • Stick to a balanced, protein-rich diet to protect muscle.
  • Stay hydrated and active – even 10-minute walks add up.
  • Keep in touch with your coach. Accountability is key.

At Medicspot you’ll also have regular check-ins to review progress, side effects and motivation.

tip

“At maintenance, you’re re-training your body to be comfortable at its new set-point.”

– Laura

Common side effects and how to manage them

Most Wegovy side effects occur early in treatment and fade by the time you reach 2.4mg, but some people still experience:

  • Mild nausea or reflux – eat smaller meals, avoid greasy foods, and stay upright after eating.
  • Constipation – increase your water and fibre intake, and include light exercise such as walking.
  • Fatigue or light-headedness – eat regularly and stay well hydrated throughout the day.
  • Low appetite – focus on nutrient-dense foods and make sure you’re getting enough protein.
  • Bruising around the injection site – vary the site you inject in.

Seek medical advice if you develop severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or symptoms of pancreatitis or gallstones.⁶

When to review or stop Wegovy

You and your Medicspot clinician will review treatment regularly. You might pause or stop if:

  • Weight loss is <5% after 6 months⁷
  • You can’t tolerate side effects despite adjustments
  • You’ve reached your goal and are ready to transition off medication

If treatment stops, your coach will support you to reduce weight regain.

What to look out for

Mild side effects are normal and to be expected. If you feel your symptoms are more severe than you expected or you are concerned please contact us.

We would always want to know about stomach pains that feel a little more than a mild discomfort or if you start feeling unwell. Any unusual redness or discharge from your injection site is also something to look out for.
