What is Wegovy and how does it work?

Wegovy is the brand name for the medicine semaglutide used in weight management for adults living with overweight or obesity. It belongs to a class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, which mimic a natural hormone that regulates appetite and blood sugar

When you take Wegovy once a week, it helps you feel fuller, slows how quickly food leaves your stomach, and reduces hunger.²

At Medicspot, each case is reviewed by a qualified clinician. We check your medical history (including your NHS Summary Care Record) and pair the medication with coaching and lifestyle support, so you’re not doing this alone.

tip

“Many of our members choose to stay on the same dose if they’re already happy with their level of appetite suppression. The goal isn’t to rush to the top dose, but to find the dose that feels right for you.”

– Laura

Why the dosing schedule matters

When starting a GLP-1 like Wegovy, your body needs time to adapt. Jumping straight to a high dose can cause stronger side effects. By increasing the dose gradually (a process called titration) you get better results and a smoother experience.³

The UK guidance from NICE recommends that semaglutide is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased activity, and only if you meet specific criteria.⁴ That means the dose schedule is just one part of the treatment story.

tip

“Wegovy comes in five pen strengths – 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1.0mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg – and people can gradually step up through these doses over several months. This slow and steady approach helps your body adjust and keeps side effects manageable. Some members find their sweet spot at 1.7mg and choose to stay there if they’re already happy with their level of appetite control. It’s all about finding the dose that works best for you.”

What you may notice at each step

0.25mg (weeks 1-4)

In the first month you might feel a bit more full after meals, notice a drop in snack cravings, or see small weight change. You may also experience mild side effects such as nausea or constipation. That’s normal.

0.5mg (weeks 5-8)

Your appetite may reduce further. Digestive changes may still occur but often start to settle. Lifestyle support matters more – the medication helps, but your habits do most of the work.

1mg (weeks 9-12)

At this stage many people report clearer changes: less emotional eating, fewer urges to snack, better control of meals. Weight loss tends to accelerate. It’s still part of the build-up phase.

1.7mg (weeks 13-16)

You’re getting close to the “maintenance” dose. Side effects should be better under control. If everything is going well, you’ll prepare for the strongest dose. For some people, staying at 1.7mg is the right choice.

2.4mg (week 17 onward)

This is the dose used in many of the major clinical trials. It’s where the full effect is expected, if you combine it with diet, exercise and ongoing support. Your health coach will monitor progress, side effects and help you stay on track.

Tips for adjusting your dose safely

  • If you feel side effects are worsening, tell your prescribing clinician. A standard option is to stay on the current dose for an extra 4 weeks before increasing.
  • Use the same time of day each week for your injection.
  • Continue lifestyle modifications (diet, exercise) – Wegovy is an aid, not a substitute for healthy habits.
  • Use a sharps container for pen disposal and follow UK disposal guidelines.
  • At Medicspot, you and your health coach will review progress together. A pharmacist will review your dose for appropriateness each month.
